There’s only so much music I can actively obsess over in a brief twelve months, so finding new stuff to relentlessly listen to is my favorite part of winter break. Here’s some records I’ve either found in the record store or best of lists.

Oneohtrix Point Never , Returnal
A synth-noise project that sounds best late at night staring at a gray wall while you pretend you’re not staring at a gray wall. It sounds kind of daunting at first, but as you dig deeper, it’s a very warm and inviting record. Daniel Lopatin also had his hands in the mis-remembered 80’s fm radio project Games. Which sounds like what the Cobra Kai would listen to if they happened to be driving a cigarette boat into crashing waves.

Ty Segall, Melted
To use a word that has been buzzing around a lot lately, Ty Segall has swag, lots and lots of swag. Melted features crunchy garage rock that does just enough to stand out from the fifty million other bands doing music like this. He’s doing a show in Hamilton, ON, March 12th, I expect you all to be there.

Shackleton, Fabric 55
A live DJ mix from a British ex-pat living in Berlin, this is a master class in how to make dance music equally suited for both the club and your bedroom. Shackleton uses clattering percussion mixed with dusty samples to create some thing outside genre confines.

Tyler, The Creator
The most talented out of the Odd Future crew, Tyler does a great job of disgusting you while remaining highly re-playable. Tyler lays his raps over droning beats that belong on wet blood splattered pavement. This is a mixtape that will crawl under your skin and stay there.

1. NY Jets: at an NFL best 5-1, I’m drinking the kool-aid. Sanchez is playing minimal mistake football a-la-Trent Dilfer in 2000, and Dilfer wound winning it all. So many weapons on both sides of the ball, so many ways to win.

2. Pittsburgh Steelers: A team that went 3-1 without their 2 time Super Bowl QB at the helms just got a whole lot better. Add that to a monster defense and you got yourself a Super Bowl contender.

3. New England Patriots: jump up after big win over the Ravens, but still plenty of questions about that secondary. But no matter how many points the opposing team puts up, Tom Brady is always capable of putting up more.

4. Baltimore Ravens: Joe Flacco in his 3rd year in the league now has legitimate weapons to throw to, and an always solid defense to back him up.

5. Indianapolis Colts: Tough loss to Houston and head-scratching loss to Jacksonville have been put behind them, and Peyton Manning always has his team contending for a ring

6. New Orleans Saints: a much needed statement win for the defending champs this week. We’ll really find out what this team is made of when they play Pittsburgh in 2 weeks.

7. Philadelphia Eagles: Kolb is getting it done in place of Mike Vick. Having 2 very good QBs in a QB driven league is not a bad thing.

8. NY Giants: After a very shaky start, the G-Men are back on track. Their defensive line still gets some of the best unassisted pressure in football.

9. Houston Texans: So many weapons on offense, and a huge diamond in the rough find in the undrafted leading rusher of the NFL: Arian Foster. Strong win on the road at Indy to start the season, and a nice come from behind win against an up-and-coming KC team.

10. Chicago Bears: Julius Peppers was a huge free agency pickup and Mike Marx has Matt Forte looking like he did 2 years ago.

11. Atlanta Falcons: Michael Turner’s lack of solid production and the Falcons defense is keeping these dirty birds from flying as high as they could.

12. Tennessee Titans: Statement win against a Jacksonville team that is overrated by their own record (if that’s even possible).

13. Kansas City Chiefs: Cassel still doesn’t look like the QB he did for the Patriots, but he is sufficient. They just have so many play makers at other skill positions that make up for what he lacks. Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weiss as your coordinators doesn’t hurt the team either.

14. Washington Redskins: Who needs the $100 DT?? Donovan McNabb and Mike Shanahan have got the Skins competing in every game they play this year.

15. Green Bay Packers: The fall from the NFC preseason Super Bowl aspirations has been a hard one for Green Bay. Injuries are plaguing this team worse than the 2009 NY Mets (well, at least pretty close) and with a defense that is struggling more than they should, the Pack needs to get it back on track quick.

16. Miami Dolphins: The fins took advantage of a broken Green Bay team, and they had to after 2 home divisional losses. Tony Sparano and company come up with great game plans to suit their team’s strengths.

17. Tampa Bay Bucs: Slowly slipping after a strong start. WNY’s own Mike Williams is doing us proud by emerging as a strong #1 WR. It’s only a matter of time before LaGarrette Blount comes in for underwhelming Carnell Williams.

18. Denver Broncos: NFL’s leading passer is…KYLE ORTON?! When the hell did that happen? Either way, this team has been battling injuries (Elvis Dumervil, Knowshon Moreno) and took a strong Jets team down the wire.

19. Minnesota Vikings: Brett Favre has looked horrific this year, and you have to wonder how much that elbow is really hurting him (along with the rest of his body). Randy Moss helps, but only if you can get the ball to him. They got it done in a must win game in Dallas

20. Seattle Seahawks: Marshawn Lynch provides that offense a spark that is desperately needed. And an underrated defense that can step up when they need to (Seattle fans just wish that was a little more frequent).

21. St. Louis: Holy Sam Bradford Batman! The Rams are on the way back up after several long years for the show-me-state. If they can keep their WRs healthy (which so far has proven challenging), this team can compete in a weak division.

22. Arizona Cardinals: The defense for the cardinals is their only saving grace right now. Max Hull may provide the spark, but there is really only so much you can hope for out of an undrafted rookie QB.

23. Jacksonville Jaguars: Where the hell did Mike Simms-Walker go? Garrard isn’t a bad QB, the only good option he has is his TE and he gets him the ball frequently. But don’t worry Jag fans, Trent Edwards is here to save you!

24. Cincinatti Bengals: a Jeckle and Hyde team for sure: beat a strong Ravens team, but lost to the Browns? Hopefully they bye week woke this team up

25. Oakland Raiders – Jason Campbell is turning out to be a flop, but the Raiders have talent at a lot of positions, and Bruce Gradkowski has shown promise in the role of starting QB.

26. San Diego Chargers – Who would have guessed the Chargers would be stumbling as bad as they are, and LT is having a breakout year? Not I. Sad times in Southern Cali right now.

27. Dallas Cowboys: How did America’s team end up here? 2 words , one man: Wade Phillips. He has the ‘boys underperforming in alarming fashion. There is just too much talent on this team for them to have only 1 win.

28. Detroit Lions: Very close games against Chicago, Philly, and Green Bay, this team is on the verge of really turning the corner, and Matthew Stafford back in week 8 will only help them do that.

29. San Francisco 49ers: Same story as the Cowboys here, how is a team with this much talent at 1-5? Mike Singletary. Don’t get me wrong, I love Samurai Mike, I’m just not sure he’s got what it takes to be a head coach. Having Alex Smith playing the role of underwhelming QB doesn’t help either.

30. Cleveland Browns: Colt McCoy gets his first NFL career start against…the STEELERS? Questionable call by Mangenius, but McCoy stood up against one of the league’s best defenses and held his own. Even while his number 1 & 2 are being taken out by head hunter James Harrison, he kept his cool and made plays. If this game was a sign of things to come, the future is bright for this kid, and the franchise.

31. Buffalo Bills: the bye week gave Buffalonians a much needed rest from the constant anguish this team provides. Hope we all are well rested because our treat this week? A game against Baltimore

32. Carolina Panthers: The Panthers haven’t even come close to winning a game this year. John Fox is riding the Titanic as it sinks in his final year as the Panthers head coach.

It all seemed to make sense from the beginning. “Don’t I know you better than the rest?” slices carefully through a hazy maze of carefully picked arpeggios, leading us into the cloud of sound that is Teen Dream, the latest release by Baltimore natives Beach House. You don’t need to be a hipster [SIC] to understand this record. Its themes are universal; it’s execution nearly flawless. Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally weave a delicate, yet grand tapestry of sound, while still preserving the elements of lonely, lovesick, pop that they have become so excellent at. Their sound palette is limited, consisting of mainly guitar, organ, and drum machine’d beats, yet all of their songs are full and complex. On Silver Soul, Legrand proclaims “It is happening again”, almost eerily marking the progression we have seen through Beach House’s three releases, Teen Dream perhaps being the finest.

Pop gems fill the album so fully that it’s almost hard to mention a single specific moment of glory. The album slowly gains momentum, and then gently eases into Walk in the Park, with soft, yet powerful, guitars and blaring organ chords. As a whole, the albums flows seamlessly within itself. Us writers play around with terms like “artistic vision”, and whatnot, but none of it makes any sense. None of it should., really. We’re all just fish floating in the deep blue sea, and Teen Dream feels like a subconscious derivative of it all.

Just for kicks, here’s my instantaneous iPod Touch review. The spelling and grammatical errors are hilarious, so I left them in.
“It the middle of a cold buffalo winter. I’m sitting in the bAsment of an old building. I work here. This is my break time, and throuhiut other intermediate breaks I have been listening to teen dream, the third studio album by beach house, the dreamy drum maxhien pop duo out of some place hat I can’t quite recall.

I started it up in the car, a d was lead into the delayed, chorused guitar horticulture that is E
Zebra. I was hooked by Norway, and a wall in the park seAled the deal, soaring over the rest on an album so already high amongst the clouds. I haven’t evenness finished listening to it, an it Already feels like some baby masterpiece waiting for time to reveal it as one of the bettr recordings of the past few years.

Shiny synths And glimmering guitars blend like, well cho plate syrup and rich whole milk, and yes, the creamy combination formed is quite delicious indeed. Even if it is packed win powerful images of shame and regret, the music embodies itself”

At some point my boss walked in, and told me my break was up, but for those brief fifteen minutes I was lost in on a glorious glowing pop trip. I’m not even going to mention the rest of the album. I’ve already told you enough information. This is one of those records that you truly need to experience with your own two ears. So yeah, go do that, right away. Oh, and by the way, they’ll be in Buffalo on June 20th at Town Ballroom.

Teen Dream was released January 26th on Sub Pop Records.
